“So, You Want to Write a Children’s Book?” Tips from 6 Debut Children’s Book Creators + 1 Future Children’s Book Creator led by Esther Hershenhorn

In this panel facilitated by children’s book author, teacher and writing coach Esther Hershenhorn, six debut children’s book creators – picture book author Sarah Glenn Fortson, picture book illustrator Darcy Zoells, picture book author-illustrator Alex Willan, middle grade novelists Malayna Evans, and Shirin Shamsi, and nonfiction chapter book writer Catherine Ann Velasco, as well as future debut children’s book creator Urania Smith, ground you in the Children’s Book World and shorten your writer’s journey to publication.


Esther Hershenhorn writes picture books, poetry and middle-grade fiction, teaches adult Writing for Children workshops at the Newberry Library and the University of Chicago’s Graham School’s Writers Studio and coaches writers of all ages to help them tell their stories. Shirin was born and raised in the UK, and now makes her home in the Chicago suburbs. Laila and the Sands of Time is her debut middle-grade novel. Shirin has raised six children- three human and three cats- all of whom have provided much inspiration for her stories.
