David Friend, an editor at Vanity Fair, is the author of The Naughty Nineties. Formerly LIFE‘s director of photography and an award-winning curator, he has executive produced films such as 9/11 (for which he won an Emmy), MLK/FBI (shortlisted for an Oscar), and Lakota Nation Vs. United States. As a journalist he has covered conflicts in Afghanistan, Lebanon, and throughout the Middle East. He is the author of Watching the World Change, about 9/11 (which he helped adapt into the CNN film, The Flag). His poetry has appeared in The New Yorker. Friend grew up in Highland Park.
