Author of Ensemble: An Oral History of Chicago Theater, which drew from his more than 300 interviews with Chicago theater artists both past and present, and Working in the 21st Century: An Oral History of American Work (2024). The latter was named a best nonfiction book by Esquire and published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Studs Terkel’s Working. Currently completing Something That Is True, based on 35 interviews with iconic Broadway composer John Kander (Cabaret, Chicago, and others) and conversations with collaborators including Alan Cumming, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Colman Domingo, Bebe Neuwirth, Susan Stroman, and David Hyde Pierce.
